GALLANT BOXERS MARCIAL AND LADON SETTLE FOR SILVER IN ASIAN BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two gallant Filipino boxers light flyweight Rogen Ladon and welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial settle for silver medals in the
ASBC Asian Boxing Championships against the No.1 ranked fighters from the awesome Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan teams in the finals at the Thammasat University Gymnasium on Friday.
Bloodied but unbowed the two young boxers who fought their hearts out against superior opponents further touched the
hearts of their supporters when they told reporter Abac Cordero who covered the fights in Bangkok, ?Sorry Sir? and ?Pasensiya na po di natin nakuha.?
Ladon who has had what must be regarded as a near spectacular performance in his first big international tournament
took a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan while Marcial who suffered cuts, welts and bruises
in his battles against some of the biggest punchers in his weight class absorbed a 3-0 loss to Asian Games champion
Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan.
Both young fighters, Ladon who is 21 and Marcial who is a mere 19 years old will have a chance to continue their quest
to make it to the 2016 Brazil Olympics as they both automatically qualified for the AIBA World Championships in Doha,
Qatar from October 5 to 15.
Flyweight Ian Clark Bautista wasn?t as lucky after a heartbreaking loss in the quarter finals ended his chances of finishing in the top six in his weight division as the fighter who beat him failed to make it to the finals along with lightweight Charly Suarez who also lost on what many considered a controversial decision.
While Marcial fought to the death as he vowed and stood toe-to toe with Yeleussinov, a veteran of the 2012 London Olympic Games who made it to the quarter finals and was already showing his potential having won the welterweight and the Asian Men?s Elite Championships in Amman, making him both Asian Continental and world champion and was named the ?Most Beautiful Boxer? by the European media.
While the talented Yeleussinov earned the victory he also took some hard punches from Marcial forcing Yeleussinov to keep his
distance in the third round but won convincingly on points.
Ladon, who had scored convincing victories over boxers from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Mongolia on the way to the finals, did not get going against the top-seeded Uzbek Hasanboy Dusmatov.
Right in the opening round, Dusmatov proved quicker on the draw and connected with left and right combinations. The 22-year-old Uzbek, who lost to London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, took the opening round on all three scorecards.
In the second round, Ladon tried to stage a comeback but failed to land the same shots that carried him to the finals. The Uzbek was deducted a point in the round for repeated ducking. The deduction did not matter in the end.
Ladon knew he was behind on points and made a desperate charge in the third and final round. Again, the Uzbek proved to be the better puncher.
The final verdict was 2-0 for the Uzbek. Two judges gave him the fight, both 29-27, while the third one had it even, 28-28.
?Hindi ko nakikita yung hook niya. Mabilis. Pero ilang beses din niya ako inulo,? said Ladon, who left the ring with a swollen right eye.
?Grabe ang sakit,? said the new pride of Bago City in Negros Occidental.
ABAP executive director Ed Picson said ?He gave his all in his first three fights then faced a much quicker Uzbek in the finals. I think Ladon has over-achieved here and he deserves credit for that.? At the same time in a message to ABAP president Ricky Vargas, Picson said ?There was not a single bout where we lost badly. Everyone fought well but obviously some adjustments need to be made.?
