Well known boxing manager Cameron Dunkin who handles five division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? among other top fighters, said he plans to bring the Penalosa brothers, Dodie Boy Jr and Dave whom he recently signed up and laid out his plans for the sons of former world champion Dodie Boy Penalosa Sr in a lengthy conversation with the New Standard.
Dunkin said he will ?bring them over to the States, set them up and start them fighting? even as he disclosed that their father Dodie Boy Sr is supposed to tell me when he wants to come. But he said it would be right away. He wants to get started right away.?
He said Dodie Boy Sr will train his two sons and ?if he needs any help I?ve got Nonito Donaire Sr and several other good trainers over here.?
Dunkin told us the Penalosa brothers ?will be on the east coast because I?ve got fights for them in Virginia, New York and Boston and so I?m going to leave them right there which is real close so I can take them out of there and get them quick fights.?
Under his plans Dunkin said he is ?going to fight them twice a month each? pointing out that he recently signed a kid out of Chicago who has had seven fights in three months, pointing out ?that?s what I?m going to do with them. They will be in four and six round fights. Lots of activity and right back in the gym again. Lots of hard work in the gym and then right into fights with easy opponents with different styles ? short guys, tall guys, left handers, right handers. It will give them a lot of experience in a quick period of time.?
Dunkin said he had seen both of them fight but indicated ?I like Dodie Boy Jr a lot but it doesn?t matter. See how it plays out? recalling that ?everybody liked Glenn Donaire better than Nonito and I liked Nonito. On this one I could be wrong but I don?t know. I haven?t seen a lot of Dave? who we mentioned was considered the better fighter by uncle and two division world champion Gerry Penalosa.
The manager said he had seen two rounds of Dave and five or six rounds of Dodie Boy and revealed ?when I saw Dave he was struggling with an average fighter. He?s winning but there?s no great power, no great speed. He is a competent fighter. Dodie Boy Jr is quick as a cat looks like a little Manny Pacquiao ? fast and cracking hard, in and out.?
He recalled a fight he saw in Macau against Thailand?s Nimithra Sithsaithong in April 2013 and said Dodie Boy Jr ?threw about 8 punches and he just took him apart like nothing. Bobbed and weaved and slipped punches and knocked his arms down then came back and threw four punches and dropped the guy with a bomb. right on the chin. It was Nonito Donaire al over again. And the guy didn?t get up and I went ? oh boy, oh boy.?
When we told him that Dodie Boy Jr was susceptible to a right straight which is the best punch against a southpaw, Dunkin conceded that he saw another fight (against Sithsaithong), a Thai kid obviously tough and Dodie hit him in the first two rounds with all of his might 50 times and the guy wouldn?t go away. Then the guy threw a straight right hand and hit Dodie Boy on the chin and dropped him. It was like Dodie Boy Jr was off balance but it was a good punch. Dodie got up smiling and everything, but he got dropped. I never saw Nonito get dropped. It makes you wonder. We?ll never know.?
For the record Sithsaithong dropped Dodie Boy Penalosa Jr in the opening round but was himself sent to the canvas in rounds two and three before referee Raul Caiz Jr counted the Thai out at 2:54 of the third round.
Dunkin promised ?I?m gonna take good care of them and going to keep them winning and I?m going to protect them. They won?t fight tough ( opponents) but they?ll fight a lot and I?ll get their names out there and when we think they are ready we?ll put them on Showbox television or something like that and then put them in some small title fights like the NABF and USBA and then from there with the rankings we?ll see who the champions are and pick the guy we want to go after for each one .?
Both southpaws, the brothers are undefeated super bantamweights with Dave sporting a record of 9-0 with 6 knockouts and the elder brother Dodie Boy Jr with a record of 13-0 with 12 knockouts.
