The Philippines Charly Suarez lost to Kazakhstan?s Zakir Safiullin in a lightweight bout on Day 4 of the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships at Thamasat University in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday evening.
The 2-1 decision in favor of the AIBA World Boxing Series champion was regarded as a bad decision since Suarez controlled the bout, at least in the first two rounds although he may have conceded the third to the Kazakh opponent.
Suarez started the opening round by sneaking in some good, one-two combinations and ended the round with a nifty three-punch flurry while occasionally darting in and out with shots to the body.
Suarez dropped Safiullin with a solid left in the second round but the referee inexplicably ruled it a slip to the consternation of Suarez? trainers and some Filipino fans following the action at the venue and also on live streaming.
The veteran Suarez capped the round by catching the Kazakh opponent with a hard right.
Suarez switched to a southpaw stance on occasions but this didn?t help and while Safiullin appeared to be the aggressor in the third and final round he hardly connected with any solid blows and was content only in flailing his hands.
The decision appeared to stun Suarez as it did ABAP executive director Ed Picson, the coaching staff and this reporter who followed the action on AIBA?s live stream.
Three Filipino boxers climb the ring at the Thammsat University Gymasium Sunday seeking to boost their hopes of making it to the AIBA World Championships in Doha, Qatar in October.
Light-fly Rogen Ladon, who drew a first-round bye, will make his debut in the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships against Rakhmankul Avatov of Kyrgysztan.
The soft-spoken Ladon, silver medalist in the last SEA Games in Singapore, has been in this Thai capital since Monday along with the four other boxers from the ABAP=PLDT Philippine team.
Reporting from Bangkok, Gilbert Cordero quoted Ladon who said ?I?m excited to fight. I?m hoping for the best in this tournament.?

Also seeking quarterfinal slots today are bantamweight Mario Fernandez and welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial, who both hurdled their opening assignments in this event offering slots to the World Championships set Oct. 5 to 15.
Only the top six boxers in each weight class here will make it to Doha where slots to the 2016 Rio Olympics will be at stake.
Fernandez, back-to-back SEA Games champion, beat his foe from Iran last Thursday, 3-0, and will take on top seed Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan in the round-of-16. The two boxers have met once in 2013 with Yeraliyev winning on points.
Marcial, also the reigning SEA Games titlist, drove past his opponent from Kyrgyzstan last Friday, 3-0, to set up Sunday?s clash with second seed Israil Madrimov of Uzbekistan.
Flyweight Ian Clark Bautista, the other Filipino gold medalist in the SEA Games last June, will only make his first ring appearance on Monday against Vietnam?s Trong Tai Bui.
Of the quarterfinalists here, only six will advance to the World Championships.
Cordero reported that Ed Picson, executive director of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines, is confident that the Filipino boxers, coached by Pat Gaspi, Boy Velasco and Reynaldo Galido, will move on to the next round.
He said ?If they can sustain the aggressiveness inside the ring, then there should be no problem. They need to be in control of the fight from start to finish. That?s how it is in amateur boxing. Our boxers as well as the coaches know what?s at stake here.?
