Filipino bantamweight Mario Fernandez opened his quest for glory in the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand with an impressive win over tough Iranian opponent Reza Korzbori who won the gold medal at the Fajr tournament in Iran.
AIBA described the Fernandez fight as the ?Bout of the Day? and said the Filipino scored a ?brilliant bantamweight triumph? over Korzbori on the second day of the championships.
AIBA reported that the first round ?produced three minutes of outstanding boxing with Korzbori clearly listening to his coach Alireza Esteki who was instructing the Iranian to reduce the fighting distance.?
Round two followed a similar theme as Fernandez began ?to assert his dominance more profoundly and he opened the final frame with a tremendous body punch.?
AIBA said Fernandez? superior stamina was the main difference between the two and he eventually dominated his tough opponent who produced an amazing challenge against the decorated Filipino.
The 22 year old Fernandez will next face Kazakhstan?s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medalist Kayrat Yeraliyev in the last sixteen.
Fernandez lost to Yeralieyev in the last edition of the ASBC Asian Confederation Bozxing Championships but AIBA believes that the Filipino ?is more prepared and experienced.?
Fernandez won his second consecutive gold medal in the last Southeast Asian Games boxing competition in Singapore with a 3rd round knockout of Thailand?s Tanes Ongjunta.
Fernandez who hails from Valencia City in Bukidnon dropped his Thai opponent once in the opening round with a vicious left hook before he finished him off with a perfectly-timed counter left hook which saw Onjunta?s knees buckle before he collapsed at 2:15 of the third round.
Another SEA Games gold medalist, hard-hitting Eumir Felix Marcial who scored a brutal knockout win over Singapore?s Jia WeinTay who was also the 2011 World Junior champion will face rugged Uulu Erkinbek of Kyrgyztan today (Friday).
