Returning to the ring after an absence of almost three years, four-time world champion Danny Green comfortably outpointed Argentina?s Roberto Bolonti over 10 rounds in front of a capacity 9000 crowd at Hisense Arena in Melbourne on Wednesday night in a fight card staged by multi-titled promoter Peter Maniatis.
Green won by a shutout with female judge Samantha Bulner, wife of respected referee/judge Malcolm Bulner a former Sri Lanka Olympic boxer, Andrew Campbell and Ignatius Missalidis all scoring the bout 100-90 in favor of the fighter known as ?The Green Machine.?
A report by Ron Reed of the Herald Sun said the scorecards ?might have been a tad generous as the 42-year-old tired towards the end and looked to concede some ground in the ninth. But it was an impressive performance in the circumstances against an experienced walk-up slugger who had lost only three of 39 previous fights.?
In a post fight interview the 42 year old Green who improves to 34-5 with 28 knockouts said ?He hardly laid a glove on me. I?m just happy to have got 10 rounds under my belt and emerge victorious and now I want to relax for a while.?
The real target for Green is a lucrative rematch with veteran Anthony Mundine if they can handle the large difference in weight.
Fight fans booed when Mundine?s name was mentioned at the end and Green said: He?s avoided me for 10 years nearly and he?s got nowhere to go. People don?t want to see him fight unless it?s against me.?
Bolonti had a reputation for aggressive in-your-face fighting but ?the Beast?, a late replacement for Green?s original opponent, Slovakian Tamas Kovacs was disappointing, rarely troubling the vastly experienced West Australian.
Ron Reed reported that Green?s long-term popularity proved to be a windfall for him and Melbourne promoter Peter Maniatis, with the venue filled to its 9000 capacity and Main Event pulling good numbers on pay TV.
Maniatis told the New Standard/boxingmirror.com that it was a great night for boxing and that Green put on ?the best performance I have seen fom a 42 year old boxer for a very long time. He reminded me a lot of Bernard Hopkins. The game plan set up by Angel Hyder was excellent.?
