Aguelo.
Adones Aguelo failed to get a fair scoring in his fight against Australian Will Tomlinson yesterday at the Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Victoria, Australia. He lost a contoversial majority decision which drew jeers from the crowd who were not satisfied by the outcome of the fight.
Two judges Samantha Bulner and Andrew Campbell favored Tomlinson 97-94 and 97-93 while Allan McColl called it a 95-95 draw for a majority decision making Tomlison advanced to 24-2-1 (13KOs).
Triple world champion Jeff Fenech, who was the promoter of the event, was among those who were shocked by what he said was a hometown decision. ?I love Will Tomlinson, but he lost the fight,? Fenech was quoted by Ron Reed of Herald Sun. ?This is what is wrong with Australian boxing.?
Aguelo of Matin-aw, Maasin City bloodied Tomlinson, the former IBO super-featherweight champion who was fighting in Australia for the first time since moving to America more than two years ago.
Aguelo cut Tomlison above the left eye and had him bleeding also in the nose and chin, the Australian fighting with a blurred vision, wrote the Herald Sun.
BoxingScene.com respected writer Jake Donovan had it 97-94 in favor of Aguelo, whose record dipped to 24-12-2 (16KOs).
"With the fight seemingly slipping away, Tomlinson managed to dig deep and make a fight of it in the final two rounds. Neither round was decisive, but enough for Tomlinson to shade it on the cards and avoid a second straight loss, as well as a major upset as the always-tough Aguelo was improperly gauged as a 10-1 underdog prior to the bout," wrote Donovan.
Aguelo will be awarded by the City of Maasin for a "winning" effort in the interim Pan-Asia Boxing Association lightweight championship.
