FORMER World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental and Philippine Boxing Federation flyweight champion Richie ?Magnum? Mepranum of Sarangani Province will fight slugger Jetly Purisima of General Santos City in the undercard of the Tibay ng Pinoy IX: Duel in Davao slated Friday at the SM Davao Annex.
The 28-year old Mepranum stopped Jomar Ministerio by a 5th round technical knockout in his previous outing held Feb. 15 at the Kabasalan Municipal Gym in Kabasalan, Zamboanga.
The southpaw won the WBO Oriental flyweight title by a unanimous decision over Juma Fundi on June 14, 2008 at his hometown in Maasim municipal gym in Sarangani Province.
Mepranum has beaten former WBA world flyweight champion Hernan Marquez, who is now scheduled to challenge reigning WBA world super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada on Sept. 26.
Mepranum also fought but lost to Estrada in their joint title-fight for the WBA super world flyweight and WBO world flyweight crowns last April 26, 2014.
The prized-fighter of Maasim Mayor Jojo Lopez suffered a disappointing 10th round technical knockout to Estrada at Centro Convenciones, Puerto Penasco in Sonora, Mexico.
Mepranum also earlier bowed to another tough Mexican Julio Cesar Miranda by a 5th round TKO (2:41) for the vacant WBO world flyweight crown last June 12, 2010 at Centro de Convenciones in Puebla, Mexico.
After losing to Estrada, Mepranum bounced back with a unanimous decision win against Albert Alcoy last September 27, 2014 in Maasim.
The 27-year old Purisima, on the other hand, is coming from two back-to-back setbacks from outside the country.
In his previous fight, Purisima dropped a majority decision to Inthanon Sithchamuang of Thailand last June 23, 2014 in Bangkok.
Purisima also lost on points to Sinethemba Magibisela last March 22 in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Purisima, however, came back home to the Philippines together with WBO champion Rey Loreto of Davao City without their purses.
Until now the South African promoter Siphatho Handi has not yet paid Purisima and Loreto of their purses amounting to US $45,000.
Purisima, who has a record of 20 wins, 15 loses, 4 draws, previously won against Japanese Yukiu Takemoto by a UD last November 14, 2014 in Osaka, Japan. ? LITO DELOS REYES
