Undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr, fresh from his unanimous twelve round decision over eight division champion Manny Pacquiao in the ?Fight of the Century? last May 2, has confirmed the New Standard/boxing.mirror.com exclusive of July 10 in which we reported that he was set to face Andre Berto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on September12.
Mayweather is heavily favored to win and equal heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano?s long-standing record of 49 wins without a loss with some doubt as to whether he will retire as he said he would, or fight one more time in an effort to register a 50th win and break Marciano?s record.
The 31 year old Berto has a record of 32-3 with 23 knockouts and won the WBA welterweight Interim title beating Josesito Lopez by a 6th round TKO last March 13 after dropping him twice in the round.
Berto earlier captured the vacant North American Boxng Federation welterweight title with a 12th round TKO over Jesus Soto Carass whom he dropped in the 11th round en route to victory on July 27, 2013.
However, Berto lost by a unanimous twelve round decision to Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero in a clash for the WBC Interim title on November24, 2012.
Guerrero faced Mayweather on May 4, 2013 and lost by a lopsided decision with all three judges turning in identical 117-111 scorecards in favor of Mayweather.
Lance Pugmire of the LA Times quoted Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe as reiterating that this would be Mayweather?s last fight despite speculation he would go for a record-breaking 50th victory in a rematch with eight division champion Manny Pacquiao sometime next year.
In announcing the Berto fight, Mayweather Jr said he was ready to get back into the ring on September 12 and ?prove again to the whole world why I am ?The Best Ever.? He added, ?I always bring my A game and this fight against Andre Berto is no exception. He?s a young, strong fighter who is hungry to take down the best. Forty eight have tried before and on September 12 I?m going to make it 49.?
Berto did his share in hyping the fight that has failed to excite much interest when he said ?I?m not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out and it won?t be me. You don?t want to miss this. I?m coming to kick Floyd?s ass. Better believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd.?
