CESAFI SETS THE EXAMPLE FOR HONESTY AND INTEGRITY IN SPORTS

The Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc, or CESAFI has set a fine example for honesty ad integrity in sports as evidenced in its crackdown on cheats seeking to circumvent the rules just days before the opening of the 15th season on Saturday at the historic Cebu coliseum.

The management of Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Education also deserves to be commended for launching a thorough investigation into the record tampering issue of several of its high school basketball players .

The issue surfaced after the CESAFI screening committee headed by Atty. Marvin Panares, Dr. Danny Villadolid and deputy commissioner Danny Duran discovered that 9 of SWU's 15 msn high school lineup had submitted tampered NSO records showing false dates of birth.

Five of the players admitted their true dates of birth which made them ineligible highlighted by Mark Anthony Quilab whose true date of birth was August 28, 1990 and not August 28, 1998 as shown in the NSO he submitted.

This would make Quilab 25 years old, way above the high school age limit.

The players pointed to coach Rey Lubguban as the person who asked the players to submit false birth dates,

CESAFI quickly acted and banned the coach and the five players involved -Quilab, Elber de la Cerna, Reynaldo Obarco, Andi Jones Turno and Edwin Abo-abo, in a decision which was hailed by SWU management .

SWU also decided to strip the players of their scholarships snd send them back to Cagayan de Oro where they all came from.

At a time when collegiate basketball's integrity is being put to the test by scouts effectively pirating high school players not just from Cebu but also from the NCAA and UAAP and when all sorts of perks are dangled before young men and their parents in order to entice them to join collegiate teams in the UAAP for instance, the stand of CESAFI and SWU shine like a beacon in the drive to reinforce the values of integrity, fair play and sportsmanship in sports and among the young men who play the game.
