Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is confident that they can help make Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao “the legend he wants to be” and could also make “the big fights in the big venues.”
However, Schaefer told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today this could only be done if Pacquiao whom he claims is “totally misguided” will eventually recognize this fact and do the right thing which is ”to honor the contract he signed with us.”
Schaefer said he was sure that everyone would agree with him that Pacquiao’s career has been “mishandled ever since he left Shelly Finkel” his last manager. The Golden Boy CEO noted that Finkel “got him out of the mess he was in, got him the biggest fights and purses and he was at an all-time high.”
Schaefer noted that Pacquiao was on the cover of Ring Magazine which is considered by many as the “Bible of boxing, won awards from the Boxing Writers and is on some lists as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Now, in the assessment of Schaefer, Pacquiao is “surrounded by people who clearly don’t have his best interests in mind” even as he warned “watch and see how quickly fame will turn to dust.”
The Golden Boy CEO said “a few more (Jorge) Solis or (Humberto) Soto like opponents and his (Pacquuiao’s) fame will start to fade.” He pointed out that for a fighter who just knocked out legendary Mexican Erik “El Terrible” Morales to “go and fight in a small pay-per-view event” from San Antonio, Texas “where the PPV numbers were not even half of what we did with Marco Antonio Barrera vs Juan Manuel Marquez is hardly the way legends are built.”
Schaefer advised Pacquiao to “wake up and take control and be outside the ring, the man he is in the ring. A man who takes charge, who is the boss and does not let anyone push him around. Do what Oscar De La Hoya did several years ago. Stand up and say enough is enough!.”
The top executive of Golden Boy said he hear that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wants Pacquiao to fight in Vancouver and posed the question “do you recognize a pattern?” He ended by stating that “what is happening is not what is best for Manny and his career, it is what is best for the people around him.”
