TMZ has confirmed that undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr, fresh from his unanimous twelve round decision over eight division champion Manny Pacquiao in the ?Fight of the Century?, will fight Andre Berto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on September 12.
In a story that boxingmirror.com ran on July 10, we said Mayweather is expected to win and equal heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano?s long-standing record of 49 wins without a loss with some doubt as to whether he will retire as he said he would, or fight one more time in an effort to register a 50th win and break Marciano?s record.
TMZ Sports said it was able to get a hold of Berto who is the former WBC and IBF world welterweight champion who said ?it?s a pleasure and honor to be in this position and I?m looking forward to capitalizing on every moment of it.?
Mayweather?s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza who was in Manila told us last week that he had to rush back to Las Vegas because Mayweather was already in training camp.
There has been talk about a possible rematch with Pacquiao sometime next year as Mayweather?s last hurrah but Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the New Standard/boxingmirror.com that Pacquiao was driving him crazy by not returning to Los Angeles as promised to have the surgery on his torn rotator cuff on his right shoulder checked and to undergo therapy.
Arum told us he would not even think about negotiating a comeback fight for Pacquiao following his loss to Mayweather last May 2 unless and until he has his shoulder checked out, undergoes therapy diligently and is declared perfectly healed and ready to fight again.
The 31 year old Berto has a record of 32-3 with 23 knockouts and won the WBA welterweight Interim title beating Josesito Lopez by a 6th round TKO last March 13 after dropping him twice in the round.
Berto earlier captured the vacant North American Boxng Federation welterweight title with a 12th round TKO over Jesus Soto Carass whom he dropped in the 11th round en route to victory on July 27, 2013.
However, Berto dropped a decision to Roberto Guerrero in a clash for the WBC Interim title on November 24, 2012.
Guerrero faced Mayweather on May 4, 2013 and lost by a lopsided decision with all three judges turning in identical 117-111 scorecards in favor of Mayweather.
