The World Boxing Council has remembered the passing of the great Filipino world flyweight champion and Hall of Famer Pancho Villa in its segment ?A Day Like Today? by Victor Cota.

The WBC website noted ?the great Filipino flyweight Pancho Villa passed away on July 14, 1925. His treal name was Francisco Guilledo. He was just 23 years old, tragically dying from an injury to his moith which c aused blood poisoning, according to doctors, who unsuccessfully fought to save him.?

The WBC said ?ten days earlier he?s lost to hard-hitting ?Baby Face? Jimmy McLarnin in Emeryvile, California.?

The World Boxing Council said ?Villa is revered as one of the very greatest fighters of a country which has produced an enviable array of boxing superstars.?

Villa was an explosive and relentless fighter who hit hard with both fists, fighting in the fashion of a "miniature" Jack Dempsey; Many consider him to be the greatest Asian fighter ever.
The founder of the prestigious Ring Magazine, Nat Fleischer, ranked Villa as the No. 2 All-Time great flyweight.

Pancho Villa was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1961 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994, one year after another all-time great Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde who reigned as world junior lightweight champion for almost seven-and-a-half years became the first Asian to be inducted into the New York-based International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Elorde was also enshrined into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
