World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman has paid homage to Nicaragua?s all-time great boxing champion Alexis Arguello and then met with Nicaragua?s president Daniel Ortega Saavedra and presented him with a famous green and gold belt.
The ceremony was attended by a roster of champions including current undefeated world flyweight champion Ronan ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez who has zoomed to No, 2 in the pound for pound standings behind WBC and WBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr; Carlos Cuadras, Ricardo Mayorga and Rosendo Alvarez plus legends such as Carlos Zarate, Alfonso Zamora and Humberto Gonzalez among others.
The WBC website reported that President Ortega confirmed his commitment to the on-going task of fulfilling Arguello?s dream of nmaking Nicaragua a successful sporting nation.
Responding to what the WBC described as an ?emotional promise? Sulaiman thanked everyone for their kind attention and hospitality for the boxing community and in ?a moment to savor as well remember? the WBC president the President of Nicaragua with a WBC champion?s belt.
Sulaiman also spoke fondly of the legacy that Alexis Arguello left and how his triumph has become a shining example to so many young people, among them the current WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez.
Sulaiman?s late father Don Jose Sulaiman had named Arguello and Filipino Hall-of-Famer Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde as the two greatest junior lightweights of their era at the 20th anniversary celebration of the WBC in New York.
Known as ?The Explosive Thin Man?, Arguello was a three division world champion who never lost a title in the ring.
During his career he fought and beat two Filipinos in title defenses ? Rey Tam of Baguio City on April 29, 1978 and Rolando Navarrete on April 27, 1980 as well as Hawaii-based southpaw of Filipino heritage Andy Ganigan on May 22, 1982.
Arguello won all three fights by a 5th round TKO although he was dropped in the opening round by the hard-hitting Ganigan but came back to stop the southpaw four rounds later.
