
55TH SOUTHERN LEYTE ANNIVERSARY BOXING TOURNAMENT OPENS

Some of the best boxers in the Visayas met at the capital Maasin City for the three-day boxing tournament in celebration of the 55th Founding Anniversary of the Province of Southern Leyte.
The fights opened yesterday at the City Bus Terminal in lieu of the Capitol Sunken Garden due to the rains. Governor Roger Mercado graced the occasion and hope that from these entrants will emerge another Manny Pacquiao.
Boxers from Cebu City Sports Commission, ALA Gym Mandaue, Leyte Sports Academy (LSA), Camiguin Tiger Boxing Club, Tomas Oppus (So. Leyte), Ubay (Bohol), Matalom (Leyte) and Maasin City, 67 of them, gathered together to give entertainment to aficionados in this boxing crazy city.
Results of the quarterfinal bouts:
Alexander Bonita (Cebu) defeated Jeeric Casida (LSA) by 1st round TKO, 28 kg. Kids Category;
Jomari Abitona (Maasin) d. Morgan Jabagat (LSA) by Split Decision, 30 kg. Kids Category;
Eduardo Jimenez (Cebu) d. Jhayvee Donaire (Maasin) by Split Decision, 34 kg. School Boys Category;
Christian Brando Oledan (LSA) d. Gil Forzado (Maasin) by Unanimous Decision, 36 kg. School Boys Category;
John Ni?o Vega (ALA Gym) d. Jeffrey Jimenez (Cebu) by Unanimous Decision, 38 kg. Junior Category;
Ramil Pingol (LSA) d. Rey Ragas (Maasin) by 2nd round TKO, 44 kg. Junior Category;
Romie Evale (Maasin) d. Justin Degahoya (Camiguin) by 1st round TKO, 48 kg. Youth Category;
Allan Refuela (Cebu) d. Jeffrey Orello (Maasin) by 2nd round TKO, 52 kg. Elite Category.
Semifinal bouts are scheduled this afternoon.
