World Boxing Council middleweight champion Miguel Cotto annihilated Australian challenger Daniel Geale in four rounds at the Barclays Center in New York Sunday, Manila Time, and then said in a post fight interview with HBO?s Max Kellerman ?let?s do it? in a call out to hugely popular Mexican Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez.
Cotto nailed Geale with a huge left hook early in the fourth round and although the Aussie beat the ciunt it was clear the end was near.
After connecting with a flurry of punches as he went after Geale, Cotto landed a stunning right straight sending Geale down once more forcing referee Harvey Dock to stop the fight at 1:28 of the fourth round.
Cotto dominated the bout from the opening bell, connecting with deadly body shots while Geale hardly had time to get going.
The possibility of a showdown with ?Canelo? Alvarez is mouth-watering especially since Puerto Rico where Cotto hails from and Mexico, the home of ?Canelo? have had a long and bitter rivalry in the ring.
Alvarez who was hoping for a Cotto fight last month had to settle for a clash with southpaw James Kirkland whom he knocked out in the 3rd round in Houston, Texas last May 9 in which ?Canelo? put on a display of power punching that brought fight fans to their feet after the major letdown in the May 2 ?Fight of the Century? between undefeated pound for pound No.1 Floyd Mayweather Jr and eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao who was apparently hampered by a tear in the rotator cuff of his right shoulder in the fourth round when Pacquiao hurt Mayweather.
Cotto said he plans to spend some time with his family and ?enjoy them again, but then its back to LA and training for Canelo? at the Wild Card Gym of celebrated trainer Freddie Roach.
Cotto who lost by a 12th round TKO to Pacquiao in a catch-weight bout in November 2009 improved to 40-4 with 33 knockouts and credited Roach who was Pacquiao?s trainer at that time for his resurgence.
He said ?Freddie has made me better at everything? after Cotto appeared to be on the decline following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Mayweather and Austin Trout before he switched to the Wild Card Gym under Roach after which he won the WBC middleweight crown from Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez of Argentina with a dominating performance and then hammered Geale into submission in four rounds.
