ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer wants a rematch for Milan Melindo who lost by a questionable 6th round technical decision to IBF light flyweight champion Javier Mendoza in Mexico on Sunday, Manila Time.
Aldeguer informed the New Standard/boxingmirror.com that ?we (Melindo) should have won it because the cut was caused by a punch. We want a rematch in the Philippines. I have talked to Zanfer about it.?
The referee, Gerard White stopped the fight and asked the ringside doctor to examine Mendoza after he suffered a cut on his left eye with the doctor claiming the champion was in no position to continue forcing referee Gerard White to stop the bout and go to the scorecards with Mendoza won on the scorecards of all three judges ? Chris Wilson and Richard Ocasio scoring it by a 60-52 shutout for Mendoza and Bill Lerch giving Melindo one round for a 59-53 tally.
Both Aldeguer and trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor insisted that the cut was caused by a legitimate punch and not an accidental clash of heads and under the rules Melindo should have been awarded a 6th round TKO victory.
Villamor pointed out that he reviewed the fight video and that while the ringside Mexican commentators including the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez said that while the heads of the two fighters came close it was a punch that caused the cut.
Villamor also pointed out that referee White did not indicate that the cut was the result of an accidental clash of heads which reinforced their contention that the cut was caused by a punch as evidenced in the TV replays.
In fact the cut was not even bad enough to warrant a stoppage.
The low blows called by referee White who deducted a point from Melindo in the 5th round were all on the belt line except for one in round five while Mendoza was not even cautioned for a clear low blow as shown in a fight photo.
It is worth noting that referee White who is from Michigan in the USA, has been officiating four and six round bouts since he was third man in the ring when former IBF champion Johnreil Casimero who lost his title on the scales after failing to make the weight, knocked out Mexico?s Mauricio Fuentes in the first round in Makati City on May 3, 2014.
Melindo appeared to have caught Mendoza with a right hook that dropped the champion in the opening round with Melindo also falling on the canvas because he was off-balance when he connected with the punch but referee White didn?t rule a knockdown.
The tough Mexican southpaw was the aggressor throughout and even though Melindo caught him with occasional flurries including a stiff right hand and a couple of uppercuts, Mendoza on a couple of occasions drove Melindo against the ropes and visibly hurt the Filipino in the second round.
But Melindo who was making his second attempt to win a world title after dropping down in weight following a twelve round unanimous decision loss to talented Juan Francisco Estrada in Macau, was deprived of victory by an erroneous decision with even Mexican boxing men blaming the referee for his poor performance.
