ANOTHER Filipino boxer from Mindanao is fighting for the world title on June 2 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Reigning Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) minimumweight champion Jerry Tomogdan of Valencia City, Bukidnon will challenge undisputed World Boxing Council (WBC) world minimumweight king Wanheng Menayothin of Thailand.
The undefeated Menayothin is a heavy favorite due to his unblemished fight record of 37 straight wins, 12 by knockouts and no draw.
The 21-year old Tomogdan, on the other hand, has a record of 17 wins, nine by knockouts against five loses and three draws.
He is a southpaw from the stable of boxing manager Roel Caamino.
Tomogdan earned the title slot due to the help of matchmaker and boxing promoter Joven Jimez, who is also helping the MP Promotions USA LLC of 8-time world division champion Manny Pacquiao.
Tomogan, who stands 5-foot-5 has won six of his last seven fights, two by KO. He won the vacant PBF title via a majority decision over Joey Canoy last January 12 in Cagayan de Oro City.
The 29-year old Menayothin previously retained his crown in his first title-defense against another Filipino challenger Jeffrey Galero of Cagayan de Oro via a unanimous decision last February 5 in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand.
The Thai orthodox boxer captured the world title by dethroning 33-year old Mexican Oswaldo Novoa by retirement in the 9th round on November 26, 2014 in Thailand.
"Dapat ma-knockout ni Tomogdan ang kalaban upang manalo," said Jimenez. - LITO DELOS REYES
