GENERAL Santos City -- Undisputed Philippine junior welterweight champion Adones Cabalquinto and his challenger Jonel Gadapan both made their weights yesterday for their 12-round title fight tonight at the Lagao Gym here.
Both of them tipped the scales at 138.5 pounds during the official weigh-in and presscon of the "Tibay ng Pinoy 8" held at the Family Country Hotel.
"I'm not sure of a knocking him out. I will just have to play it safe," said the undefeated Adones (18W, 11 KOs), who is making his fourth title-defense.
Gadapan, on the other hand, is confident of beating his much-taller rival.
"I'm prepared for the fight," said Gadapan (9W, 7L, 2D).
Ten other fighters from the MP Stable and their opponents also made their respective weights yesterday.
International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan Pacific super flyweight champion Jerwin "Pretty Boy" Ancajas (22W, 14KOs, 1L, 1D) of Panabo City and Juan "Punisher" Purisima (11W, 4KOs, 7 L, 1D) of Gensan submitted weights of 115 and 114 lbs., respectively in the main supporting bout.
Ancajas has long been waiting for this fight against Purisima, who won three of their four encounters during their amateur days.
"Isang beses lang nanalo si Ancajas kay Purisima sa amateur. Kaya't gusto-gustong talaga niyan makabawi," said co-promoter Joven Jimenez.
Two other exciting fights pit IBF World Youth super flyweight champion Aston "Mighty" Palicte (17W, 15KOs, 1L) of Bago City against Luzon Professional Boxing Association (Luzproba) super flyweight king Michael Escobia (10,1, 2KO, 9L, 1D) of Bohol and former interim IBF Pan Pacific super bantamweight champion Drian "Gintong Kamao" Francisco (27W, 21KO, 2L, 1D) of Mindoro Occidental versus Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super flyweight king Jason Canoy (23W, 17 KO, 5L, 2D) of Balamban, Cebu.
Palicte tipped at 114 while Escobia first submitted 117 but later shred off the extra pounds. Francisco, 32, made 119 against only 117 by the 24-year old Canoy.
"He (Canoy) is a solid boxer. I will just have to use my experience against him," said Francisco.
Canoy said that he can beat Francisco after watching his fights from the Youtube.
Saranggani Congressman Manny Pacquiao, whose MP Promotions is staging the boxing show, will be watching all the fights.
"He (Pacquiao) is now also very excited to see his boxers fight tomorrow", said MP Davao Stable c chief trainer Raides "Nonoy" Neri.
"We might see the potential future Manny Pacquiao from them," added Neri, also one of Pacquiao's Filipino assistant trainers and a dietician.
Also seeing action in the undercard are Genesis Libranza vs. Rodel Tejares (8 rds-109 lbs.), Dono Romero vs. Arnel Asebuque (8 rds.-127 lbs.); Orly Silvestre vs. Michael Borja (8 rds.-105 lbs.); Marvelo Aballe vs. Ding-Dong Quinones (6 rds.-118 lbs.); Renemark Cuarto vs. Sadam Barambagan (6 rds.-105 lbs.); Aries Benavidez vs. Mark Guenia (6 rds.-111 lbs.); Ronnie Baldonado vs. John Leo Galleposo (6 rds.-106 lbs.); and Jose Ravelo Aballe vs. Julius Protestas (6 rds.-115 lbs.).
