
Pacquiao nixes inclusion of Sarangani in proposed Bangsamoro territory

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? World eight-division boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao said he?s supporting the quest for a just and lasting peace in Mindanao but he doesn?t want that his province be included in the proposed Bangsamoro region.
In a statement, a copy of which was sent to this writer, Pacquiao declared: No need to include Sarangani in a proposed Bangsamoro territory.
In the same statement, Pacquiao claimed that Sarangani has been experiencing relative peace and its inclusion in the proposed Bangsamoro region is no longer necessary.
Pacquiao added that the inclusion of Sarangani and other parts of Mindanao ?may cause instability and further complicate our search for inclusive lasting peace.?
?I recognize the need to pass a law that will govern the area to ensure lasting peace and order which are the keys to economic prosperity and development in the region and throughout Mindanao,? Pacquiao?s statement further said.
Government peace panel chair Mirriam Coronel-Ferrer sought the endorsement of Pacquiao for the passage of BBL in Congress sometime last month while the latter was holding a training camp in Los Angeles for the May 2 fight.
Pacquiao, however, begged off saying he has still to study further the contents of the proposed BBL.
Pacquiao explained that he?s for peace but he needs to scrutinize further the provisions of BBL especially those which are contradictory to the provisions of the Constitution.
?I had experienced the horrors of war when I was still a boy. We were living in the hinterland part of Barangay Tango in Glan when the encounter between the military and communist guerrillas broke out,? Pacquiao bared.
The Pacquiao family had to leave the area and evacuate to a safer place even during the wee hours of the night just to avoid being caught in a crossfire.
On Tuesday evening, Pacquiao called all Sarangani mayors to a meeting to get their stand on the BBL issue.
Those who showed up during the meeting, which was held at the reception hall of Pacquiao mansion 2 in this city, included Gensan mayor Ronnel Rivera; Malapatan town mayor Alfonso Singcoy; Alabel mayor Corazon Grafilo; Glan Mayor Victor James Yap; Malungon mayor Renato Constantino; Maasim Mayor Anecito P. Lopez; Maitum Mayor Pepito L. Catimbang and Kiamba Mayor Raul C. Martinez.
All the mayors present rallied behind Pacquiao in opposing the inclusion of Sarangani in the proposed BBL region.
