TAGUM CITY ? Former team champion Central Visayas is now only one step of regaining its crown as four of its boxers managed to enter into the finals of the on-going Palarong Pambansa at the Tagum City Pavilion here Thursday.
Sixteen-year old Kit Ceron Garces of Talisay scored a unanimous decision win against John Rick Navarro of the Nationao Capital Region in the semifinals of the light flyweight (46-49 kg.) division.
Garces, a bronze medalist last year, will face in the championship Region 12?s Jayson Mama, who clobbered CARAGA?s Jethro Alejandre by a majority decision.
Three other CVIRAA fighters scored contrasting wins to also barge into the finals.
Light mosquito John Nino Vega (36-38 kg.) outclassed Criz Russu Laurente of dethroned defending champion Region 12 and light paperweight Lloyd Jabez Antoque (42 kg.) crushed Region 8?s Metchel Mark Potoy both by unanimous decisions.
Pinweight Vicente Sios-e Jr. (44-46 kg.), a silver medalist in 2014, easily advanced with a walkover win against overweight John Benedict Cadavido of host DAVRAA.
Cadavido?s teammate Jave Lawrence Arguelles was also disqualified for not making the 42-kilogram weight limit in the light paper division against Region 5?s Anthony Quintana.
Quintana, 14, of Bicol will next face Antoque while Sios-e takes on CARAGA?s Ramel Landa, who eliminated Region 8?s Milenino Anduyan. Vega will fight for the gold against Region 6?s Dindo Sabillo, who outpointed NCR?s Ranidel Crampatanta by a unanimous decision.
Mosquito John Michael Diocares is DAVRAA?s lone finalist after he beat Region 10?s Rejemelyr Namocatcat by a unanimous decision. He will face Region 4-B?s Bryan Sabido, who outpointed Region 9?s Jude Jaictin in the other semifinal bout.
"The two DAVRAA boxers failed to make the weight limits during the official weigh-in Thursday morning. So they were DQ (disqualified)," said Edwin Pardillo, president of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) Davao del Norte.
CVIRAA was the team champion from 2011 to 2013 before 8-division world champion Manny Pacquiao?s Region 12 composed of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani Province and General Santos City won it last year. LITO DELOS REYES
