Richard Schaefer.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says Top Rank promoter Bob Arum ?knows exactly what he has to do if he wants to settle the various cases? currently pending between Golden Boy and Top Rank adding that ?the ball is in his court, not in ours.?
Schaefer was reacting to an earlier statement made by Arum in on his arrival Thursday morning from Las Vegas to give Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao ?moral support? in his bid for a congressional seat in South Cotabato.
Arum told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today he was hoping that sometime later this month they could ?sit down, stop all this legal stuff that?s burning up millions of dollars and get down to business and resolve the Pacquiao case and other issues? that are being litigated with Golden Boy.
Schaefer, in an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today from his office in Los Angeles said he had ?not heard any such thing? in reference to a possible meeting later this month. Schaefer added ?maybe he was dreaming about that in his flight over to Manila.? The Golden Boy CEO stressed that if Arum ?continues to go behind our back and talk to our fighters and try to steal other fighters from us and keeps calling us bad names and belittling Golden Boy Promotions then that?s the wrong pattern. He is going down the wrong path.?
Schaefer was referring in particular to Arum?s claims that former WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera who was demolished by Pacquiao in ten rounds in November 2003 in San Antonio, Texas wants a rematch with Pacquiao and says ?he is a free agent? and claimed that Barrera?s people had spoken to Top Rank.
The former Swiss banker who only recently acquired US citizenship along with his wife insisted that the claim was ?incorrect? and that the Golden Boy lawyers had informed Arum that Barrera is under contract with Golden Boy Promotions and that Barrera, in an interview with the Mexican media acknowledged that he was with Golden Boy. Schaefer stressed ?the bottom line is Barrera is under contract with Golden Boy Promotions and any conversation he would have with Barrera would constitute an interference with our existing and valid promotional rights and we would move very swiftly to have another lawsuit against him.?
