Top Rank promoter Bob Arum arrived early this morning from Las Vegas to give Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao moral support in his bid to wrest the congressional seat in South Cotabato from incumbent Darlene Antonino Custodio.
In an exclusive interview with Viva Sports/Manila Standard today, Arum said “he’s my man and he wants so much to be congressman the least I can do is down the homestretch be by his side.”
Arum made it clear he understood the limitations placed on him as a foreigner who was prohibited from campaigning for Pacquiao. He said “I don’t profess as a foreigner to tell Filipinos how to vote but I think I can tell Filipinos what a fine guy Manny Pacquiao is, what a great credit he is to the country and how he is loved around the world. That I can do but I do not wish in any way to tell the Filipino people how to vote.”
Arum said he appreciated the welcome extended by Comelec chairman Ben Abalos and the advice given him about refraining from campaigning for Pacquiao. Arum said “I appreciate what he said which is absolutely correct and I endorse that.”
Arum said he was taking a connecting flight to General Santos City this morning and would return to the US on Sunday which is one day before Filipinos go to the polls.
