Previously unbeaten Richard Claveras of Negros Occidental in the Philippines aimed for three things in his trip to Mexico this week.
One, he wanted to be a world champ. Two, he wanted to keep his unbeaten record intact. Three, he was looking to knock out WBC Light Flyweight Champ, Pedro Guevara in his hometown.
None of his three goals were successful Saturday night in Mexico.
Claveras succumbed to a first round knockout in the hands of Guevara in only the first round of their world title match at the Centro de Usos Multiples in the champ?s hometown of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
A wicked hook to the liver from the champion sent a fast-starting Claveras down in the 2nd minute mark of the scheduled 12 rounder. Hurt and in pain, Claveras was unable to recover and was counted out by the referee while still kneeling down in the canvas.
Guevara retained his WBC green belt and improved his record to 25 wins and 17 KOs against a loss and a draw. The 25 year-old Mexican champion may face another Filipino in the future as his mandatory challenger in Jonathan Taconing (21-2-1, 18 KOs).
Taconing recently defeated Guevara?s countryman, Ramon Garcia Hirales last week. Taconing won via 10th round TKO over Hirales, a former world champion, in Mexico.
Claveras? perfect record of 12 wins and 12 KOs is now gone, with the KO loss tonight.
