MISMATCHES GALORE

The much publicized efforts of the Games and Amusements Board to crackdown on unscrupulous individuals who send Filipino boxers abroad, especially to Thailand only to be mauled in terrible mismatches continues in our own backyard.
Pingping Tepura, a fighter of Rex ?Wakee? Salud as listed by boxrec.com was knocked out at 2:21 of the second round in an obvious mismatch against undefeated Daiki Kameda on Monday. Kameda entered the ring with a record of 8-0 with 6 knockouts while Tepura had a record of 9-8-5 with 4 KO?s. However, Salud distanced himself from Tepura claiming he got rid of him after he was caught stealing his cell-phone and that the boxer belonged to the so-called ?Lost Command.? Salud claimed the fight for Tepura who is not in the GAB top ten was arranged by trainer Juanito Ablaca and even admitted that Kameda was ?very strong.?
Tepura was knocked out by Bert Batawang last January 21 and also lost his two previous fights to Junichi Ebisuoka on September 18, 2006 following an earlier defeat at the hands of Jonathan Ba at. Kameda, on the other hand, was coming off a third round KO win over undefeated Vicky Tahumil of Indonesia who had a record of 33-0-2 with 12 KO?s.
In the highly publicized Fiesta Fistiana, a loudly booed decision in the main event in which Philippine super bantamweight champion Ricky Escaner of the Marty Elorde stable retained his title via a highly dubious majority draw against Jake Verano who is handled by Leonil Lazarito was compounded by two obvious mismatches.
The country?s No. 2 minimum weight Denver Cuello scored a third round TKO over Carlo Besares whose last recorded fight was reportedly on December 8, 2005. Cuello?s record was 9-2-2 with 3 KO?s while Besares had a forgettable record of 5 wins as against 10 defeats and 1 draw with 2 knockouts.
In another classic mismatch No.1 featherweight 22 year old Michael Farenas won by a second round TKO over 33 year old Jeffrey Onate who has a dismal record of 32 wins against 25 defeats, 7 draws and 17 KO?s and had lost 7 of his last 8 fights. In fact the TKO loss to Farenas was Onate?s fifth straight loss and his fourth by KO or TKO. On January 7 Onate lost by a first round KO to Jorge Linares and on May lost by a unanimous twelve round decision to Vinvin Rufino where Onate was dropped in the 7th, 10th and 11th rounds. On September 18 Onate lost by a first round TKO to Satoshi Hosono and on December 23 was knocked out in the second round by Rey Labao.
But that wasn?t all this past weekend. In North Cotabato, Glen Porras scored a first round TKO over Reggie Binueza whom he had previously knocked out in four rounds last December 9. In fact Binueza had lost four of his last five fights while Porras won by a second round KO over Rey Llanasa, a fourth round KO over Binueza and a fourth round TKO over Benjie Lumacad. To cap it off Brix Ray who had a record of 2-1-1 with 1 KO and was coming off an impressive win over undefeated Nic Banal (5-0, 2 KO?s) scored a fourth round KO over Roldan Malinao who had just 1 win against 8 losses with one KO according to boxrec.com.
