Claverias (R).
In an unbelievable development, World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Pedro Guevara of Mexico is reportedly scheduled to defend his title against No. 26 ranked Filipino Richard Claveras on April 11 in Sinaloa, Mexico.
The New Standard/boxingmirror.com learned from British trainer Warren Evison who is part of the United International Boxing Promotions team that Claveras was getting a title shot which was confirmed by boxrec.com.
The 25 year old Claveras, nicknamed ?Explosive? is the reigning WBC Asia Boxing Council champion but his record of 12-0-2 with 12 knockouts is misleading although he is coming off a 1st round knockout of Indonesia?s Demsi Manuofe last January 31 in the Mandaluyong City Gymnasium.
The 24 year old Guevara has fought some of the best light flyweights and won the vacant title with a 7th round knockout of Japan?s highly touted Akira Yaegashi on December 30, 2014 in Tokyo. However, Guevara dropped a close twelve round split decision to the Philippines IBF champion Johnreil Casimero on August 4, 2012 after he was dropped by Casimero in the opening round.
The New Standard/boxingmirror.com contacted WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman who was on vacation with his family and he told us that Claveras was recommended by the Asian Boxing Council after two Filipinos picked ahead of him were unable to face Guevara for whatever reason.
