GONZALES WINS PABA TITLE IN STUNNING UPSET

The Philippines' Nonoy Gonzales who had lost his last eight fights has scored a stunning upset to win the vacant Pan Asia Boxing Association middleweight title by forcing Australian Gavin Topp to retire at the end of the sixth round in a fight card at the Magic Millions Complex in the Gold Coast in Queensland.
The fight was a rematch of their February 23rd bout which was stopped at 0:04 of the fourth round due to a cut suffered by Topp following an accidental head-butt in round two. At the time of the stoppage, Topp had scored a shutout according to all three judges.
Topp who had a record of 20-3-3 with 4 knockouts was highly favored to win over Gonzales, a fighter of Lito Mondejar who was sent to Australia a couple of years ago by Jemmel Cantoyoso. Gonzales had a record of 21-19-2 with 12 KO?s.
Gonzales began his eight fight losing streak on July 5, 2005 when he lost back-to-back fights against Thailand?s Sataporn Singwancha in WBC Asian Boxing Council light welterweight title fights. On March 3, 2006 Gonzales lost by a fifth round TKO to Michael Katsidis and on May 12 dropped an eight round decision to Topp before losing another unanimous eight round decision to Daniel Geale.
Gonzales was then beaten by Adam Vella over ten rounds on August 4, 2006 before losing a unanimous ten round decision to Robert Medley on September 8 and then retiring in the sixth round against Shannan Taylor last December 15.
However, against Topp, Gonzales was a totally different fighter. Ray Wheatley of World of Boxing reported that the Filipino connected effectively with left hooks and right hands to the head and had Topp bleeding from his nose. Gonzales pressed the action in round three and hurt the shorter Australian with solid punches and dropped him in the fourth.
Topp was warned for the second time for low blows by referee Phil Austin in round four while Gonzales was cautioned for hitting on the back of the head. Although Topp fought back behind his left jab at the start of round five, Gonzales caught him with a flurry of shots to the body. Sensing he had hurt Topp, Gonzales went all out at the start of the sixth round and battered Topp whose face, according to Wheatley, was ?a mask of blood from several facial wounds? and at the end of the round Topp?s trainer called it quits.
The 30 year old Gonzales came in at 157 3/4 pounds while Top who is 34 weighed 159 ? pounds. All three judges had the Filipino ahead when Topp retired. Alan Moore had Gonzales leading 59-54, Alan Simpson 57-56 and Francisco Martinez 59-54.
