CASIMERO PREPARES FOR SHOT AT RUENROENG WHO BEAT ZOU SHIMING IN A LACKLUSTER TITLE FIGHT

Former IBF light flyweight champion and No. 1 ranked mandatory IBF flyweight contender Johnreil Casimero is preparing in the US for a title shot against Thai champion Amnat Ruenroeng (15-0, 5 KO?s) who scored a comfortable unanimous decision over an over-hyped, undefeated two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming (6-1, 1 KO) of China who suffered his first pro setback before a sellout crowd at the Cotai Arena in Macau on Saturday.

In a lackluster title fight Ruenroeng worked behind an effective jab in the first half of the fight to pile up a lead despite suffering a questionable knockdown ruled by referee Mark Nelson early in the fight when the champion was off balance and tripped over Zou Shiming?s foot.

All three American judges turned in identical 116-111 score cards and prevented what some thought would be a hometown decision before a predominantly Chinese crowd.

Ruenroeng played it smart by holding whenever Shiming tried to be the aggressor but the lack of punching power of the Freddie Roach trained Zou Shiming and his inability to cut-off the ring cost him.

Casimero, the former junior flyweight champion who has power will be a different proposition for Ruenroeng.

Dr. Rajan Yraola told the New Standard/Viva Sports that Casimero and ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona are currently training in Las Vegas after a two-week stint in Big Bear, California where Sonsona sparred twice with former world champion Shane Mosley.

Before the two fighters left for the US, Yraola told us that while Sonsona, the lanky, hard-hitting southpaw played basketball just like Manny Pacquiao to stay in shape, Casimero would go jogging at the Loyola Memorial Park in Novaliches to get in shape and reduce his weight which was some 14 pounds over the flyweight limit but with the time available before a planned title fight should be no problem.

Casimero earned the title shot with a spectacular 2nd round knockout of IBF International champion Armando ?Cobra? Santos in Hidalgo, Mexico last December 14. Casimero dominated the fight from the opening bell and exploded towards the end of round one to drop Santos who was terribly groggy even after the one minute break in-between rounds.

Casimero wasted no time in going after the hapless hometown boy and ripped into him with a flurry of punches sending Santos down for the second time in the fight and out at a mere 0:25 seconds of round two.

Dr. Rajan Yraola who owns the Quezon City gym where Casimero trained said that even this early Casimero ?is okay.?

With the smashing victory over Santos , the colorful 24 year old Casimero lost his light flyweight title on the scales last May 3 when he was some four pounds over the limit. But even while wearing ten ounce gloves he knocked out Mauricio Fuentes in the first round to improve to 21-2 with 13 knockouts.
