OPBF lightweight champion Randy Suico has retained his title with a unanimous decision over Japan’s Tomonori Nakagawa at the Prefectural Gym in Osaka, Japan.

News of Suico’s victory was relayed by Filipino promoter and boxing manager Rex “Wakee” Salud in an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today.

Salud said it was a good fight and Suico was in control most of the twelve rounds against Nakagawa who didn’t have a big punch.

Two of the three judges, Masahiro Noda of Japan and Salven Lagumbay of the Philippines had the 27 year old Suico comfortably ahead 116-111 while the third judge Ukrid Sarasas had Suico the winner 116-114.

With the win the former top contender for the WBC super featherweight title held at that time by Marco Antonio Barrera improved to 25-3 with 22 KO’s. Nakagawa dropped to 15-6-4 with 4 knockouts.

Suico relinquished the OPBF super featherweight title and moved up to lightweight and won the vacant crown with a fourth round TKO of Pongpetch Chuwatana of Thailand on October 14 last year in Mandaue City in the Philippines.

Suico figured in a world title eliminator against South Africa’s Mzonke Fana in Johannesburg in May 2004 but lost a hometown decision despite decking Fana twice and having him staggering across the ring in the final round. Fana then went on to fight Barrera for the title and was mauled and knocked out in two rounds.
