Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has warned Top Rank’s Bob Arum to lay off former WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera.
Schaefer expressed his disgust over claims by Arum that Barrera was leaving Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and disclosed that Golden Boy’s legal team “has put him on notice on Friday to stop interfering with our promotional relationship with Barrera.”
Schaefer pointed out that Barrera “is with Golden Boy and has a contract with us.” Schaefer accused Arum of wanting to “steal more Golden Boy fighters like he stole Manny Pacquiao from us and now he wants to steal Barrera and I don’t know who else.”
The respected Swiss banker accused Arum of launching “a personal vendetta” against Golden Boy.
Schaefer said he had spoken with newly crowned WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez yesterday following previous meetings with HBO and they were definitely going to have Marquez defend his title on September 15 and Golden Boy would see who was available. He said if Barrera wants a rematch “it would be great” but indicated they had several other options like Rocky Juarez, Joan Guzman, Jesus “El Matador” Chavez and “plenty of possibilities.”
Schaefer also mentioned the possibility of doing a rematch with Chris John of Indonesia to whom Marquez lost his WBA title in a highly controversial decision as well as undefeated KO artist Edwin Valero.
Schaefer said he didn’t understand how Arum could mention a Pacquiao-Marquez rematch in September when Marquez is with Golden Boy Promotions and not with him. Referring to Arum’s public statements that he was wiling to sit down and talk with Golden Boy’s top executives, Schaefer responded “the guy is not really serious. Besides, we believe we have the promotional rights to Manny Pacquiao and this is his way because he realizes that in order to do the big fights he needs to sit down and talk to us. He doesn’t have too many options.”
Schaefer said Arum insulted him personally by calling him a pro-Nazi Swiss banker and used “really bad words” and now wants to talk to him. Schaefer said “I have nothing to sit down and discuss with this guy. What for? Schaefer added “ I think he has some mental problems otherwise you don’t act like that.”
