Mercito Gesta is looking to make big moves for 2015. And that starts with a new and major promotional company who is willing to bolster his chances of returning back to the spotlight and world title contention.
The San Diego based fighter out of Mandaue City, Cebu spoke to Philboxing.com about his recent signing with Oscar De La Hoya?s Golden Boy Promotions and his plans for this New Year.
?I am really excited that I am now with one of the biggest promotional boxing company and I am so excited to get back again in the ring and I know that Golden Boy Promotions, they can do that. Now that is all set, all that I need to do is be a hundred percent in shape and wait for the scheduled fight.? Gesta told Philboxing.com after his official signing with the company.
That next fight will be announced once Team Gesta and Golden Boy agrees on the terms of what will be his first bout under the promotion?s banner. Both sides are currently in ?great discussions? of their upcoming plans.
Gesta was once connected with the other major promotional company in boxing - Bob Arum?s Top Rank Promotions. He was released by Top Rank in 2013 and he has been a free agent ever since.
Gesta (28-1, 16 KO) fought twice in 2014 - both TKO victories in April and July. His last victory against Luis Arceo at the Longshoremen?s Hall in San Francisco and televised live on Fox Sports 1 in the United States was a joint venture by Paco Presents Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions in which he stopped the veteran Arceo in seven rounds.
The 27 year old fighter who once vied for the IBF lightweight (135 lb.) title against then champ, Miguel Vazquez, is still eyeing to compete at and around the same weight class.
?135-140 (pounds), I am alright there. I can do that. Let us see this first 2015 fight, what it?s going to be at, if they advise me to this at 140 or 135, that doesn?t matter right now.? said Gesta who is aiming to once again get a crack at any of the title holders of the lightweight division.
?For the title fight, at 135, I would say, at that one.? he added.
Gesta refused to divulge the length of his contract with Golden Boy or the other details of his contract with the Los Angeles based promotional company and expressing relief that the business side of fighting has now been settled.
?It is good that I have established the connection and that I have signed with them. Everything is great. All I have to do now is train, train.?
And training is what Gesta has been doing these days. He has been training both in boxing and also in his original sport, Muay Thai under his father and trainer ? Anecito Gesta Sr. at the CMAC ? Bid Gym in San Diego.
Gesta also expressed gratitude to his fans that have been following him, both in San Diego and in the Philippines and his team that has been instrumental with the recent development in his career.
?I am thankful that they never gave up on me and that they keep believing on me. I am really thankful.?
