CHICAGO -- The San Antonio Spurs stretched their winning streak to seven games on Sunday afternoon by pounding the Boston Celtics, 111-89, at the TD Garden.
The road romp was a nice welcome present to head coach Gregg Popovich who returned to his duties after going through an undisclosed medical procedure.
Six Spurs finished with double figured in points. Danny Green drilled four treys to top with 18 while Boris Diaw had 15 and seven boards. Tim Duncan added 14 and eight rebounds and Aaron Bynes gave 13 off the bench. Kawhi Leonard wrapped up the scoring parade with 12.
Although they made only 36 of 87 (41.1 percent), the Celtics stayed with the Spurs and trailed only by three --- 80-77 --- with still 10:15 left in the fourth quarter. But the Spurs went into high gear from there and rattled off a 31-12 spurt to improve to 12-4.
"We had too many turnovers and they had too many second chance points. We took care of that in the second half and picked up our energy and gave ourselves a chance," Green told the San Antonio Express News.
The Spurs, the reigning and defending NBA champions, are in 10th place in the crowded Western Conference. They are 6-1 at home at the AT&T Center in San Antonio and 6-3 on the road.
Jeff Green had 16 points for Boston while Evan Turner swished 12. Marcus Thornton and Brandon Bass each had 10 but the Celtics just didn't have enough firepower to handle the loaded Spurs.
The Celtics careened to their fourth straight loss and fell to 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a 4-10 slate. (Homer D. Sayson)
