NBA -- Spurs make it 10 in a row over Cavs

CHICAGO -- Despite a massive off-season rebuilding project that netted them a Big Three -- LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving -- the Cleveland Cavaliers still couldn't figure out the San Antonio Spurs.
Tim Duncan carved 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the reigning NBA champions Spurs to a 92-90 victory over the Cavaliers at the Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday night. It was the Spurs' 10 straight conquest over the rebuilt Cavs.
But it took more than just Duncan's double-double to thwart the Cavs, who are one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference and a strong challenger to San Antonio's reign.
Boris Diaw chalked 19 points and six boards and Kawhi Leonard had 12 and 10 rebounds. Corey Joseph chipped in 10 off the bench while Tony Parker and Danny Green combined for 16. Manu Ginobili finished with only points but he drilled a lay-up and a free throw late to preserve San Antonio's triumph.
Kyrie Irving was held to only two assists but his 20 points led the way for the Cavaliers, who dropped to modest 5-5 for the season and good only for sixth place in the East.
LeBron James had his usual overall fare with 15 points, six rebounds and nine assists. Kevin Love pitched in 10 and 11 boards. James and Love, however, made only 10 of their combined 29 field goals.
Despite the debacle, James found a silver lining and told reporters, "This is a game I'm happy about. I hate to lose, but I'm happy about the progress we made tonight."
As they try to find chemistry and work under new head coach David Blatt, the Cavs defense struggled in this young season. But on this home stand, the Cavs held to Spurs to under 100 points and just 44 percent from the field.
With their second straight win, the Spurs improved to 7-4, two-and-a-half games behind the Memphis Grizzlies who led the tough Western Conference with a 10-2 slate. (Homer D. Sayson)
