World Boxing Organization president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel has named Samuel Viruet as referee for the title defense of light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes against Mexican challenger and No. 5 ranked Carlos ?Chapito? Velarde in their ?Pinoy Pride XXVIII? clash at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu on Saturday.
Viruet is the same referee who officiated in the Z ?The Dream? Gorres title challenge against Mexico?s bantamweight champion Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel and was criticized for the manner in which he handled his task as third man in the ring on February 24, 2007. Montiel won by a split decision.
The WBO release said Velarde had a record of 20-0 with 11 knockouts which is incorrect. His record is 26-3-1 with 14 knockouts.
The judges for the Nietes-Velarde title fight will be M. Lacend from the United States, Masakazu Murase from Japan and Filipino judge Salven Lagumbay.
Fight supervisor will be WBO Asia Pacific head Leon Panoncillo Jr.
