The Philippines former WBC super flyweight Silver champion Sylvester Lopez has suffered an 8th round TKO at the hands of unbeaten Mexican super bantamweight Silver champion Rey Vargas at the Arena Coliseo in Mexico.

Vargas wanted a rematch after he won their first meeting also by an 8th round TKO when Lopez had cramps according to his promoter Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde and called it quits before the start of the 8th round.

With the win the popular 23 year old Vargas moves towards a possible title fight even as he improves his record to 22-0 with 19 knockouts while Lopez drops to 22-9-2 with 16 knockouts.

The World Boxing Council reported that Vargas ?showed power but also increasing maturity and patience to pound and confound hellaciously tough Filipino Sylvester Lopez, to impressively defend his on his WBC youth super bantamweight title, with an eighth round TKO.?

The WBC website reported that Vargas ?unleashed a fearsome attack in the first several rounds. using his extraordinary height and albatross wingspan reach advantage. He busily employed the left lead to set up his opponent for some wicked long rights to the body and head.?

The report commended Lopez who, it noted, ?weathered this typhoon, as Sylvester showed that he's no Tweety pie! He soaked up everything, with both of his sallow cheeks swelling up to the cheery red plumpness of Santa Claus. To show he wasn't mince pie, he actually cuffed Rey back quite effectively from time to time.

The WBC noted that it was at this point rookie Vargas ?for several rounds seemed to slightly lose the plot nut not for long as Nacho Berista?n was in his corner, advising him to forget about macho toe to toe, and to conc?ntrate on punishing the much shorter teak tough Filipino from from long range.?

It said ?the one way traffic smashes continued apace, with Sylvester becoming involved on the business end of some ever more eye watering collisions.?

The WBC informed the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that in the eighth round Lopez ?was being pounded from pillar to post. Vargas unloaded his full arsenal and Lopez was being absolutely hammered although paradoxically the last connecting punch came from Lopez, but at a ratio of roughly twenty to one, Referee Guadalupe Garcia, wisely intervened to call a timely halt at two minutes two seconds.?

The premier world boxing organization said ?it was a most valuable and instructive learning curve for Rey, who adapted intelligently, once a customary early stoppage was out of the question. He's learning fast and developing splendidly, but he's not yet ready to take on Leo Santa Cruz? the reigning champion.
