Filipino Rolly Lunas, now using his Japanese name Matsushita, successfully defended his Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) bantam title with an eleventh-round knockout victory a few hours ago over Thailand's Samingnum Wor Wiwatananon at the Sangyo Hall in Kanazawa, Japan.
Matsushita dropped his Thai challenger in the second round, and prompted referee Silvestre Abainza to stop the fight in the eleventh after a barrage scored by the Filipino champion.
The Tabaco City native Lunas, who is now based in Japan, is coming off a close technical decision win over compatriot Malcolm Tunacao to wrest the OPBF title last January 13, and yesterday's victory paves the way for a training stint in the United States.
"I am leaving on April 25 for the US, and I will train at the LA Boxing Gym," Lunas told this writer in a long-distance interview last night. "I will also have my next fight in the US," he added.
