ILOILO CITY --- He can now walk straight with his head up everytime fellow Ilonggos greet him and mention about his involvement in professional boxing.

“At least I am now a licensed professional boxing promoter and manager,” beamed Porferio D. Clavel Jr., Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regional director in Western Visayas, while showing his two licenses released recently by the Makati-based Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

The licenses—No. BX 07-625 BP-013-2007 for promoter and No. BX 07-624 BM-016-2007 for manager—were released recently by GAB boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz through Clavel’s liaison Rommel Samonte, a Makati insurance executive.

“With these licenses I can now plan my promotions with confidence,” said Clavel, who is also criminology professor in the University of Iloilo.

LTFRB Regional Director for Western Visayas Porferio D. Clavel, Jr. shows his boxing licenses.

Among his immediate plans, Clavel revealed, is to secure the licenses of his four wards from Oton, Iloilo so they can include him in his inaugural promotions this year.

Clavel said he will also move to meet other boxing bigwigs in the Visayas led by Cebu impresario Antonio “Bidoy" Aldeguer and his associate Sammy “Don King” Gelloani and Rex “Wakee” Salud “to get some pointers on how to have a successful promotion.”

“I must admit that I am only a neophyte promoter therefore I would need the advice and guidance of these respected personalities in fight business,” said Clavel who personally submitted his credentials as promoter and manager to GAB Chairman Eric Buhain and Commissioner Alex Paglumotan during a meeting in Bacolod City last February 8.
