
ROWERS TO START PHIL. CAMPAIGN IN 2014 ASIAD

The five-man rowing team will have the honor of opening the country?s campaign in the coming 17th Asian Games. Incheon, South Korea is hosting the event for the second time in 12 years.
Rowing,according to Philippine Olympic Committee treasurer and deputy chef de mission of the 160-strong Philippine contingent Julian Camacho, is one of 11 sports that will be disputed ahead of the opening day.
Competition in this water sport, Camacho, who attended the CDM meeting along with Philippine Sports Commission chair and delegation head Ritchie Garcia, said during inaugural airing of SPORTS SABADO last Saturday, will start September 15 or five days before what is expected elaborate opening ceremony on September 19 at the newly-built Incheon Asiad Main Stadium at the heart of the host city.
Camacho, who is also the secretary general of the Wushu Federation of the Philippines, added during the public service forum, sponsored by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, PSC and Rain or Shine, announced, too, that hostilities in basketball, equestrian, fencing, judo, shooting, tennis, weightlifting, wushu, swimming and artistic gymnastics will commence before the Olympic-style inaugural rites on September 17.
The Filipino cagers, made up of an all-PBA superstars, equestriennes, fencers, judokas, shooters, racquet-wielders,lifters and world-class wushu artists will all be seeing action starting September 17.
Swimmers and artistic gymnasts start to display their wares on the eve of the opening on September 19, Caxmacho said.
No competition is scheduled on the opening day to be held at the huge, 61,000-seat main stadium that was built to the tune of US dollars 400 million, Garcia, for his part said in a phone patch interview with SCOOP president Eddie Alinea and co-hosts Vic Endriga and Allan Hobrero,
The Philippines, Garcia said, is competing in 25 of the 36 sports in the calendar, including athletics,archery, bowling, boxing, sailing/windsurfing, golf, triathlon, softball, canoe-kayak, cycling, wrestling, taekwondo, rugby and karatedo.
Garcia and party also joined the CDMs of other Olympic Council of Asia member countries in ocular inspection of the Athletes Village, and competition venues within the vicinity of the host city,
They are Seonhak gym, site of the boxing competitions, Ganghwa Dolmnens gym where wushu and taekwondo hostilities are scheduled and the BMX track in cycling.
Except for the old bowling venue, all of the venues the CDMs visited are newly-constructed state of the art Garcia said.
The Athletes? Village where 13,000 athletes, coaches and trainers will be housed is located in the vicinity of Guwol-dong and Namdong-gu districts in Incheon.
