San Carlos City's top boxing personality Gerry Penalosa lost in his world title fight today, but another son from the city stepped up into the plate to win a major regional title.
Jojo Bardon of the Rex 'Wakee' Salud Stable took the OPBF flyweight title hours ago by beating previously undefeated Japanese Masaharu Naganawa with a split decision victory in their 12-round battle at the International Conference Hall in Nagoya, Japan.
Bardon, who came into the fight as a Philippine champion, took the Japanese by surprise and dominated him for the well-deserved win.
Rex 'Wakee' Salud, who manages Bardon, said that his ward's victory was the result of hard work in the gym under the watchful eyes of trainer Juanito Ablaca.
Bardon came into the fight a heavy underdog to win the title, as the Japanese boasted of a perfect 11-0-2, 2 KO's while Bardon had a less-than-stellar 15-10-1, 8 KO's.
Hakuei Ohno, an avid boxing fan from Japan, said Bardon won fair and square and was impressive in beating the tough Japanese.
Bardon is set to arrive in the country tomorrow along with his trainer and Filipino boxing judge Sev Necesario.
