Phils targets better finish in Asiad

?Improve on the three gold medals the Philippine delegation fashioned out four years ago in Guangzhou, China.?
This, practically, was what Philippine Sports Commission chair Ritchie Garcia told would-be members of the national contingent that will be tasked of carrying the country?s colors in the 17th Asian Games set this coming September and October in Incheon, South Korea.
?Yes, we will definitely be trying to surpass our performance in 2010 in Guangzhou,? Garcia, who has been appointed to oversee the country?s preparation and actual participation in the 2004 edition of the quadrennial conclave as chief of mission, said during Thursday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan On Air forum over DZAR Radio.
Garcia said that if training plans do not miscarry, a gold medal harvest of from five to six would not be that remote a possibility.
To attain the purpose, Garcia told his interviewers in the public service forum, sponsored by the Triple FV Foods Corp. and viewed also via streaming at www.sonshinetvradyo.com, that his agency will be seeing to it that the some 200 athletes he expects to make it to the contingent will have the needed extensive training that will include international exposures to all of them if possible.
The PSC, in fact, according to the agency?s top honcho reiterated, has earmarked a special P50 million funding for training alone, which all the NSAs, whose athletes will be participating, can avail of provided they can show proof that said athletes are qualified to earn the trip.
?We are doing this to assure, not only our athletes, but our countrymen as well, that we are serious in our preparations with the end in view to see our athletes will perform the way we expect them to,? Garcia stressed.
The amount is apart from the P30 million the PSC board of commissioners had allot for the actual participation.
?That is why I am calling those who have already made it to the Incheon trip and to shoes still aspiring to rain seriously with their eyes focused on doing their best to bring home the gold medals,? he said.
Garcia disclosed that 142 athletes, representing 19 sports, have already made the trip following justification from their associations with a little more than a hundred more still vying for slots in the qualifying competitions their respective national sports associations are committed to take parts in.
Included in the list is the 12-man men?s basketball squad, 15-player women?s softball team, 12-man rugby team, 10-athlete track and field side, eight-fighter boxing team, 12-man taekwondo and 12-man bowling teams.
The golf-playing PSC head said several local competitions, including the on-going Palarong Pambansa and the coming Philippine National Games will also be used as gauge to the 142 lucky ones whether they will remain in the delegation or not.
?The PNG, in particular, is crucial because all members of the national teams in their respective NSA are obligated to take part,? Garcia said. ?Failure to participate would mean they?ll lose their seats as well as their status as priority athletes.?
?The same will happen if they lose to their up-and-coming counterparts, who, thus, will themselves earn slots to the national Asian Games delegation,? Garcia emphasized. ?So my advice to everyone is not to be complacent that they?re already sure to go. Kailangan ma-maintain nila ang kanilang standing or else, they?ll be out.?
