BONGBONG MARCOS VOWS TO SUPPORT ALL SPORTS-RELATED BILLS

Tired of seeing Filipino athletes losing in international competitions they take part in, Sen. Ferdinand ?Bongbong? Marcos called on all stakeholders to band together for a change in the present organizational set-up in the country?s sports development program.

The young Marcos even suggested the need to replace the present sub-cabinet Philippine Sports Commission with a cabinet-level Department of Sports.

The only son of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, in a speech during the Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde Awards Night and Banquet of Champions, made a vow to support all the sports-related bills still pending in the Upper Chamber, including the creation of a separate national Department of Sports to see an end in the Filipino athletes losing performance in the international sporting arena.

?Why is it that we are languishing in the medal tallies in regional and international competitions?? the former governor of home province Ilocos Norte would want to know? ?Kahiya-ahiya ang nagiging performance natin sa mga international competitions.?

Citing the lack of sufficient support by the government in the form of a continuing, constant and consistent program, aimed at ensuring the welfare of the Filipino athletes even when their careers are over, pledged his all-out support to all the measures that have already been field and will be filed in the Senate.

?I am making this pledge before you all that our Filipino boxers and athletes can and will expect my full supports as your legislator and as a Filipino,? Marcos vowed. ?Masugid kong susuportahan and mga panukala sa Senado na naglalayong matulungan ang ating mga boksingero at atleta.?

He said that he has checked on the bills so far filed in the Senate that relate to boxing and sports, in general, ?and I have concluded that they are indeed worthy and deserving of my unwavering support.?

Marcos cited the bills on welfare of boxers and health care, the retirement and death benefits for Filipino professional athletes and the one which, he added ?will be music to the ears of the leaders of our sports sector: the bill seeking to create a separate national Department of Sports.?

?With you in my camp, I will be your ?champion?, so to speak, in ensuring that these proposals will become a reality in the Senate,? he promised. ?I urge everyone in this banquet and in the industry to band together and act with one voice, -- with one FIST! ? to wake the government up in our national sports development program.?

Hinting that the PSC has lost its effectiveness in carrying out its mandate to protect the Filipino athletes and coaches, Marcos called on his audience, saying, ?you can help open the eyes of the government and convince your legislators on the urgency of making changes to our present system, as well as to the wisdom and importance of these present legislative proposals,?

Marcos said rather jestingly.
