Esteemed international referee Bruce McTavish from New Zealand, the best there ever is in the business, celebrates his 40th year in the Philippines today.
On February 12, 1967, McTavish first set foot in the country on a business trip, and has since fallen in love with its people, culture, and of course, its boxing.
McTavish, married to the former Carmen Tayag, says his friends call him Bruce McTayag in reference to his being henpecked, of course said tongue-in-cheek.
Seriously, McTavish is the poster boy of boxing officiating, and has even developed his own legion of fans who recognize his work in some of the biggest bouts in the country and in Asia, including most of Manny Pacquiao's bouts here.
"I am as Filipino as can be. My heart beats for the Pinoy," McTavish said.
