MAG GIVES BOXING A BOOST

Filipino boxers will soon get what they truly deserve. Eight division champion Manny Pacquiao and two-division titleholder Gerry Penalosa have joined hands with businessman-sportsman Anson Tiu Co to form an organization they call MAG (as in Manny-Anson-Gerry) Pacman International Boxing Promotions to look into the welfare of Pinoys campaigners and stopping their long-prevailing exploitation of their peers.

MAG, according to Co and Penalosa during a well-attended press conference held at the Solaire Resort and Casino, will also make sure that deserving Pinoy fighters will have a crack at the world championships using the influence of Pacquiao in the international boxing community.

?The MAG Pacman International Boxing Promotions was founded to alter the state of Philippine boxing,? Penalosa told print and broadcast media men. ?We believe we can attain this goal by promoting world-class boxing events for the benefit of fight fans, discover and develop future world champions and make sure fighters earn a decent living for their future and their families.?

Pacquio was not present at the presscon, but sent a message, saying: Kapag maraming promotion ang boksing, mas maganda para sa mga boksingero.? He said.

Penalosa, for his part, said. ?Kasama si Manny at Anson, pagtutulungan naming ibalik yung kasikatan ng boksing dito sa bansa.?

?Because one of our priorities is helping our boxers, we will try to compensate them at least 50 percent higher than the norm they presently receive whether one is a four-rounder or main-eventer,? Tiu Co, owner of Shape Up Boxing Stadium inside the family-owned Cooyeesan Hotel in Baguio City, said.

To start their ambitious venture, the group is presenting an 11-fight card highlighting a triple main event titled ?First Blood? featuring three of the hottest fighters today ? Michael Farenas, unbeaten Dodie Boy Penalosa Jr. and Richard Pumicpic.

The card, set at the luxurious Solaire grand ballroom, will be an extension of the Philippines versus Mexico series with Farenas tangling Jesus Rios in a 10-round super-featherweight encounter, while Pumicpic taking on Luis Lugo over 10 rounds of a super-bantamweight class.

Dodie Boy Jr., son of another illustrious two-division belt-owner Dodie Boy Sr., stakes his record 11-0 unbeaten record, all via stoppage, against Alem Robles, in an eight-round super-bantamweight scrap.

Two more 10-rounders featuring Jeffrey Cerna and Fernando Ocon and Ronnel Ferreras against Roque Lauro, three six-rounders and the same number of four rounders complete the 11-fight card.

All of the proceeds that will be generated with be donated entirely to the victims of super-typhoon Yolanda in the provinces of Leyte and Samar.

?Yes, lahat po ng kikitain sa card ay ibibigay naming sa mga kababayan nating biktima ng bagyong Yolanda,? Tiu Co asserted in answer to a query. ?Initial promotion pa lamang namin ito at hindi baling malugi kami dito basta makatulong lamang sa mga nangangailangan.?

?May mga susunod pa naman kaming promotion at doon na lang kami babawi,? he said.
