NIETES FIVE MONTHS SHY OF BREAKING ELORDE'S LONGEST REIGN RECORD

Filipino World Boxing Organization light-flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes stopped Mexican challenger Sammy ?Guty? Gutierrez in the third round to keep his 108-pound belt and capped a Philippine sweep of the six-fight, 62-round ?Filipinos Kontra Latinos? Pinoy Pride XXIII presentation Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Nietes dropped the overmatched Gutierrez, a former World Boxing Association interim minimumweight belt holder, three times, twice in the opening bell and finished off his Mexican foe two second left of the third with a vicious right straight to extend his two-division reign to six years and seven months.

The 31-year-old two-fisted demon Filipino, who earned his moniker ?Ahas? for his liking of reptiles, ruled the WBO minimumweight class from 2007 to 2011 before transferring to the light-flyweight level to win the division that same year.

He is five months short of equaling Hall of Famer Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde?s seven-year reign as the world junior-light champ from 1960 to 1967, the longest in the 130-pound class until today.

And for sitting on his throne that long, a brighter future beacons Nietes in his decade-long boxing career. His manager, ALA Promotions top man Michael Aldeguer said after his boy?s victory, that Nietes will be eyeing to unify the light-flyweight division with the belt owners of the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation.

But that is after a rematch with WBO minimumweight titlist Moises Fuentes, who drew with him March of this year.

The young Aldeguer, son of ALA Promotions patriarch Antonio Aldeguer, is, in fact, thinking much much ahead as far as his prized pupil is concerned. One other plan is to move Nietes to the flyweight class where bigger money is.

?Kasama sa plano yun,? the young Aldeguer told People?s Journal in a post-fight interview. Pag ba wala nang makalaban si Donnie sa dibisyon nya ngayon eh di lilipat na tayo sa mas mabigat.?

To which Nietes is in full agreement, saying, ?kung yun ba ang desisyon ng handler ko, di sundin. Wala naman tayong inuurungan basta para sa bayan.?

Aldeguer said the fight against Fuentes could come in February or March in a still unspecified venue.

Not to be outdone, reigning WBO minimumweight champion Merlito ?Tiger Sabillo, likewise retained his crown although he could only settle for a split draw against Nicaraguan hard-working title pretender Carlos Buitrago in the accompanying 12-round co-main event.

Milan ?El Metodico? Melindo recovered his winning ways with a whooping unanimous decision triumph over Alfredo ?Torito? Rodriguez, also of Mexico to gtrab the WBO international flyweight diadem.

The same result was accorded Jason ?El Nino? Pagara, who outpointed Dominican Republic?s Vladimir Baez in a 10-round scuffle for the WBO international light-welterweight plum.

Completing the Filipino fighters? sweep of their Latino counterparts was come backing Al ?Bazooka? Banal who beat Puerto Ridan Lucian Gonzales in another 10-round featherweight clash.

Jimrex ?The Executioner? Jaca led of the local boys? triumphant marchu with a fist round knockout win against Indonesian Wellem Reyk in a six-round light-welterweight scrap.
