Boxing hero Manny Pacquiao apologized to victims of calamities in the Visayas and parts of Mindanao for the delay in his trip to those places until such time when his problem with the Bureau of Internal Revenue shall have been settled.
The BIR has, barely days after the eight-division champion beat American Brandon Rios, froze Pacquiao?s and his wife Jinkee?s bank accounts for his alleged failure to pay taxes for his earnings from his fights in the United States in years 2008 and 2009.
?I promised to go to those places hit by super-typhoon Yolanda, particularly Tacloban City, which was hardest hit by the calamities, and was ready to go there this week until the problem cropped up,? Pacquiao said in a long distance telephone call.
?It made me really very happy when I saw in social media clips na puno ng tao ang iba?t-ibang stadium, plaza at marami pang lugar para panoorin ang aking laban,? Pacquiao related.
?Salamat sa Panginoon at kahit papaano ay nakapagbigay ako sa kanila ng at inspirasyon at pag-asa para sila makabangon sa mga kahirapan dala ng sakunang dinadanas natin,? Pacquiao, who will turn 35 two weeks days from now, said.
?It is, actually, our kababayans who served as my inspiration and motivation to win that fight,? he said, adding that was the reason why he promised to see them after the fight and personally hand them whatever assistance he can afford.
?It is a commitment on my part to go there and extend assistance and I will not be remissed on that commitment. I?m sure hinihintay nila ako doon ? Pacquiao, who convincingly beat ?Bam Bam?Rios via an overwhelming unanimous decision last Sunday in Macau, said.
?We have already decided on the date kung kalian pupunta, kaya lang na-hold muna,? he said. ?As soon as we cleared everything up, tuloy na. Pakisabi lang sa ating mga kababayan na my people have been moving heaven and earth para maayos na ang lahat at makarating ako sa kanila.
Pacquiao said several of his friends and business associates have already responded to his call of helping in his efforts to help he calamity victims. ?Yung iba nga pinapautang ako ng pera para makapamili ng mga dapat dalhin sa mga biktima.?
Pacquiao?s business manager Mike Koncz confirmed his boss? statements, saying, indeed, he and his assistants are turning no stone unturned in seeking solution to the problem.
?Yeah, we?ve been doing everything, including calling the U.S. IRS (Internal Revenue Service) for assistance in solving the issue as soon as possible,? he said. ?As of now, it?s the BIR problem first before anything else.?
The BIR had assessed Pacquiao a total PHP 2.2 billion in unpaid taxes, including penalties.
