MACAU, China ? Fights involving Filipino ring sensation Manny Pacquiao almost always drew the best and the finest in the sports writing fraternity.
Sunday?s 12-round welterweight come back scrap with Brandon Rios, like many of eight-division champion?s outing, is no exception.
Seen frequenting the huge fight media center daily since it opened shop last Tuesday are some of the who?s who of the world?s boxing writers fraternity like Kevin Iole of Yahoo, Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley of HBO and Greg Bishop of The New York Times.
Unlike Pacquiao?s big fights held mostly in Las Vegas, chinky-eyed Asian Journalist from China, Korea, Japan, India and the Philippines have been roaming the press room and the adjacent mess hall.
One veteran sports scribe, who has been covering Pacquiao fights for years said the list of the some 500 journalists can hardly be considered giants of the world?s boxing writers community. ?Half of those given credentials out of the more than a thousand who applied are Chinese,? one media center personnel attested followed the other half being Filipinos, Koreans, Indians and Japanese.
?The presence of some 20 to 30 Filipino writers, television media personnel and photographers is explainable because of the significance of the fight as far as the future of Pacquiao?s career is concerned,? she added.
The so-called big three in the country?s newspaper industry, for instance sent at least a pair each, headed by their sports editors ? Ding Marcelo of the Bulletin, Lito Tacujan of the Star and Teddy Melendrez of the Inquirer.
Also here are Inquirer columnist Recah Trinidad and sportswriter Roy Luarca; Nick Giongco of the Bulletin and Abac Cordero of the Star; Julius Manikad of Tribune; and Abante sports ed Virgie Romano.
