TAGAYTAY --- Tagaytay (Philippines) toppled Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), 2.5-1.5, in the seventh round of the 2013 Asian Cities Chess Team Championship also known as Dubai Cup late Thursday here.
GM Mark Paragua defeated FM Myagmarsuren Gunbayar on board 2 to power Tagaytay to victory after his team mates Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa, John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo ended drawing all their games against Mongolian counterparts.
Barbosa split the point with GM Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa on board 1, Gomez drew with IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul on board 3 while Laylo halved the point with IM Gombosuren Munkhgal on board 4.
The win thus gave Tagaytay 13 points in this nine-round Swiss-system using the match point system which gives two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero point for a loss.
The Tagaytay team is schedule to meet Pasay-Philippine Airforce in the eight and penultimate round late Friday in the tournament hosted by Rep. Abraham ?Bambol? Tolentino, the Fide Asian Zone 3.3 president and the Tagaytay City government, headed by his wife and Mayor Dr. Agnes Tolentino.
The Col. Vicente F. Flora Jr.backed Pasay-Philippine Airforce chess team trounced Erdenet, Mongolia, 3-1, with National Masters Onofre Espiritu, Raymond Salcedo and Allan Cantonjos won their respective matches in this event which offers $3,000 aside from the Dubai Cup to the winning team, while the second and third placed teams will receive $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
In the eight and penultimate round late Friday, Barbosa battle IM Barlo Nadera; Paragua opposite Espiritu; Gomez will face Salcedo and Laylo goes up against Cantonjos.
Meanwhile, Shanghai (China) beat Manila-Philippine Sports Commission, 3-1, while Wuxi (China) crushed Shah Alam (Malaysia), to share second place with 11 points each.
IM Lou Yiping and WGM Zhang Xiaowen defeated IM Roland Nolte and IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia on board 3 and 4 provided the twin kill for Shanghai.
GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. drew with GM Zhou Jianchao on board 1 while GM Richard Bitoon split the point with WGM Ju Wenjun on board 2.
In other matches saw, Baghdad (Iraq) edged Singapore (Singapore), 2-5.-1.5, Seoul (Korea) upset Bs Begawan (Brunei), 3-1, Sharjah (UAE) blasted Kuwait (Kuwait), 4-0, Colombo (Sri Lanka) crushed Abu Dhabi (UAE), 4-0, and Dubai (UAE) drew with Chinese-Taipei (Taipei), 2-2.
