Round 4: Tagaytay-PHL beats Shanghai-China in Asian Cities Chess Team Championship

TAGAYTAY---Grandmaster John Paul Gomez defeated International Master Lou Yiping to lift Tagaytay (Philippines) to a stunning 2.5-1.5 win over 2nd seed Shanghai (China) in the fourth round of the 2013 Asian Cities Chess Team Championship also known as Dubai Cup at the Tagaytay International Convention Center, Tuesday here.

"Mahirap y'ung posisyon buti napilit ko y'ung laro," said Gomez, who got his GM title during the 2008 Dresden Olympiad, the reigning Battle of the Grandmasters-National Open champion.

With 8.0 points, the top seed Tagaytay remained on top in the tournament hosted by Rep. Abraham ?Bambol? Tolentino, the Fide Asian Zone 3.3 president and the Tagaytay City government, headed by his wife and mayor, Dr. Agnes Tolentino.

The 9 Round Swiss-system using the match point system which gives two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero point for a loss offers $3,000 aside from the Dubai Cup to the winning team, while the second and third placed teams will receive $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.

GM Oliver Barbosa held GM Zhou Jianchao to a draw, GM Mark Paragua drew with WGM Ju Wenjun while GM Darwin Laylo split the point with WGM Zhang Xiaowen.

Fourth-seeded Philippine Sports Commission-Manila (Philippines), third-seeded Wuxi (China) and eight-seeded Baghdad (Iraq) won their respective matches to share 2nd to 4th placers with 6.0 points each.

PSC-Manila bannered by GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. toppled fifth-seeded Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), 2.5-1.5, Wuxi at the helm is GM Wei Yi outclassed sixth-seeded Sharjah (UAE), 3-1, and Baghdad led by CM Mohammed Zozek Salah Mohammed blasted seventh-seeded Pasay-Philippine Airforce, 4-0.

In other matches saw, ninth-seeded Shah Alam (Malaysia) nipped 17th-seeded Dubai (UAE), 4-0, 10th-seeded Erdenet (Mongolia) trounced 15th-seeded Seoul (Korea), 3-1, 11th-seeded Colombo (Sri Lanka) walloped 18th seeded Chinese-Taipei, 3-1, 16th-seeded Singapore blanked 13th-seeded Bs Begawan (Brunei), 4-0, and 14th-seeded Kuwait subdued 12th-seeded Abu Dhabi (UAE), 3-1.
