The Philippine boxing team supported by PLDT-ABAP and the Philippine Sports Commission joined 457 boxers from 100 countries who qualified after the official weigh-in last Sunday for the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The ABAP four-man squad is a "lean and mean" team in the words of ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson. The Philippine team is led by 2012 London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga of Panabo, Davao del Norte in the 49-kg light-flyweight division.

Barriga will face 2011 SEA Games silver medalist Ngoc Huynh of Vietnam on Wednesday.

Roldan Boncales, 20 years old, from General Santos City, fights 1988 Beijing Olympics veteran, 30-year-old Eddie Barillas of Guatemala in the 52-kg flyweight division on Monday.

Dennis Galvan of Bago City, the SEA Games gold medalist in 2011 in Palembang, Indonesia, will box with Azerbaijan?s 2012 London Olympics boxer Gaybatulla Godzhialiyev, 23, in the 64-kg light-welterweight category on Tuesday. The Azerbaijan boxer is a veteran internationalist since 2007.

Mario Fernandez of Valencia, Bukidnon fights in the 56-kg bantamweight division against Imran Khan, the national champion of Guyana on Thursday.

Picson is hoping the ABAP team will come up with victories in this gathering of the best boxers in the world amidst the cold fall temperatures.

?There are more boxers and countries here than in the Olympics. We face some tough fights but the boys have prepared well. There are no weight problems, they?re eating and training well and they?ve adjusted well to the weather, since we arrived 4 days before opening day," Picson was quoted by inter-AKTV.
