Here's some bad and good news for Filipino fight fans.

WBO no. 1 superfly contender Z 'The Dream' Gorres has been found to have a chronic abscess by renowned orthodontist Ed De la Vega during a medical check-up today at the latter's clinic in Los Angeles.

De la Vega is known as the official team dentist of Manny Pacquiao who has done all the custom-made mouthguards of the Filipino superstar.

Both Z Gorres and Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista, together with trainer Edito Villamor, visited Dr. De la Vega at his clinic today to have their new mouthguards fitted which they will use for their February 24 bouts at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

"What was planned as a short visit to take impression for their new mouth guards turned out to be a 5 hour affair," said De la Vega in an interview.

"I picked up the boys in Los Angeles early today so I can take them to my office. They didn't have a ride so I had to pick them up. Edito was with them.

"When we got to the office, I decided to do a full mouth exams on the two boys. What I found out on Z could have easily scrapped the fight on Feb 24th. Z had a chronic abscess on his lower right bicuspid. It was the type of a lesion that could go acute at anytime and cause a lot of problems for Z. When I showed the x-rays to Edito, he told me the story about Z's only loss," De la Vega said, referring to Gorres' only loss at the hands of Edgar Rodrigo.

"Apparently, Z had dental abscess when he fought so he lost the fight because he was not 100% in shape. Wow, imagine if the abscess peaked during the week of the fight? It could have easily be a cause to cancel the fight or at the very least cause Z to lose the fight!"

"I felt so good about finding Z's problem this early. It gave me a chance to take care of the problem before they go home next Friday to prepare further for his fight on the 24th. I completed a root canal on the problem tooth. That saved his tooth and the fight! With antibiotics which I prescribed, I am sure he will be okay and will be in top shape for the fight. He had a broken partial denture. I fixed that too. On top of that, I did a routine prophylaxis on him and made him a new red/white/blue mouth guard for his fight. Z promised to report to me the next time they return to LA so I can do the rest of the dental work he direly need."

De la Vega then next worked on Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista, who will be going up against Colombian Feider Viloria in the Gorres-Montiel card.

"Boom-Boom's case was cut and dry. He did not have as much immediate problems as Z had. So all I did for him was an oral exam and prophylaxis. I also made him a new mouthguard using the ALA Club colors: red, black and white. I advised Edito to take Boom2x to an oral surgeon in Manila after his fight on the 24th and get his wisdom teeth taken off as they are impacted and may cause major problems down the line. When they get back to LA, I will then take care of his cavities," the expert dental surgeon said.

"Edito did not have much work either. So I simply did prophylaxis on him. I plan to fix his cavities next time around," De la Vega said.

After the work at the office, the group then had a late lunch at Pollo Loco. The boys, according to De la Vega, enjoyed flame broiled chicken and cole slaw washed down with herbal tea.

"We had a long day but it was well worth it. At least now I know the fight will not be scrapped for dental reasons. I took care of that!" De la Vega said, sounding relieved.
