The Petron Blaze Boosters entered the Philippine Basketball Association finals once again. Series of three-pointers boosted the Boosters as they triumphed over Rain or Shine, 110-89 victory on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum as a ticket to the championship of the PBA Governors? Cup.
Elijah Millsap topscored for 34 points, while Marcio Lassiter poured in 27, while Alex Cabagnot contributed 23 as Petron ended the semifinals, 3-1. The Boosters made a heyday in the three-point area sinking 14-of-27 for a a high 51.9 percent conversion.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters were dethroned of their crown as they missed the services of Paul Lee. Later in that game, they also lost Jeff Chan due to an injury in the first half.
The biggest lead of the Blaze Boosters was at its highest at 25 points when they lead 70-45 with the booming baskets of Millsap. The Painters however came to within 10 points, 80-70 behind the offense of import Arizona Reid.
But Lassiter and his teammates ignited a Petron charge as they pulled away by 16 and maintained an advantage until the end of the game.
The last time Petron joined the PBA finals was when they won the Governors? Cup title in 2011, when they snapped the Grand Slam attempt of Talk ?N Text.
They will take on the San Mig Coffee Mixers, who earlier took the first seat in the title round after eliminating Meralco. Game One of the finals will be on Friday at the Mall Asia Arena.
Petron will face the San Mig Coffee Mixers who are also back in the finals of the Governors? Cup. They defeated Meralco, 79-73 on Sunday behind the assault of Marqus Blakely who banged in 23 points, James Yap who scored 19, and Marc Pingris who added 16.
The Coffee Mixers finished the semifinal series 3-1 against the Bolts. Their final game was even closer as Meralco did not give way until the dying seconds of the game.
The prolific San Mig Coffee import added 19 rebounds and five steals in the victory, which gave the Mixers a 3-1 win in their semifinal series.
San Mig Coffee had the lead at the start of the game,13-1. They also took a 27-16 lead at the end of the first half. Then it was exciting all the way as they entered the final quarter of the game.
Meralco closed in at 75-73, courtesy of a goal by Reynel Hugnatan less than a minute left of the game. But a layup by Mark Barroca put the Mixers safely ahead by four points. Blakey converted two free throws to seal the San Mig victory.
San Mig Coffee, then known as B-MEG Llamados, lost the title to Rain or Shine in seven games during last year's Governors' Cup.
The two franchises played in the PBA for a long time now. Their last finals encounter though was during the Governors? Cup in 2000, when Petron, then named San Miguel Beer, defeated San Mig Coffee, then branded as Purefoods, 4-1, in their best-of-seven series. Both are sister teams under San Miguel Corporation.
